1. About WordTing
WordTing is a children’s reading support app. It helps children scan real book pages, tap words to hear them, save tricky words, and practise reading through simple activities and games.
2. Privacy-first approach
WordTing is designed to keep children’s reading content on the device where possible.
Saved books, saved words, reading progress and practice activity are stored locally on the device.
When a scanned page is unclear, WordTing may use Better Scan to improve the recognised words. Better Scan sends the scanned page image securely to our cloud OCR service so the text can be read more accurately.
WordTing does not require a child account.
WordTing does not sell personal data.
WordTing does not show third-party advertising in the MVP test version.
3. Information the app may use
WordTing may use the following features:
Camera:
Used to scan book pages.
Photo access:
May be used where a parent chooses a photo or image for reading support.
Online OCR / Better Scan:
When a scan is unclear, WordTing may send the scanned page image to a cloud OCR service to improve text recognition. The scan is used to extract text and return improved words to the app.
Microphone:
May be used for pronunciation or reading activities if enabled.
Speech recognition:
May be used for reading or pronunciation support if enabled.
Text-to-speech:
Used to read words aloud using voices installed on the device.
Saved reading content:
Scanned text, saved books, saved words, reading progress and practice activity are stored on the device.
4. How information is used
Information is used to provide the app’s reading features, including:
- scanning book pages
- recognising text from images
- improving unclear scans using Better Scan
- letting children tap words to hear them
- saving tricky words for practice
- reading words aloud
- supporting tracing, spelling, pronunciation, phonics and word games
- showing reading progress and struggling words
5. Data sharing
WordTing does not sell personal data.
WordTing does not share children’s reading content with advertisers.
The MVP test version does not use a backend account system.
Some unclear scanned page images may be sent to a cloud OCR service to improve text recognition. This is used only to extract text from the scanned page and return improved words to the app.
Some device features, such as text-to-speech, speech recognition, or voice services, may depend on services provided by the device operating system or installed system providers, such as Apple or Google.
6. Children’s privacy
WordTing is designed for children and families.
Parents or guardians should supervise children when using the app, especially when scanning book pages, checking scanned text, or using microphone features.
Parents should avoid scanning pages that contain private personal information.
We aim to collect as little information as possible and keep children’s reading content on the device where possible.
7. Data storage and deletion
Saved books, scanned text, saved words, reading progress and practice activity are stored on the device.
Parents can delete saved words in Parent Settings.
Parents can delete saved pages or books inside the app.
Uninstalling the app may remove locally stored app data from the device.
8. Security
We take privacy seriously and aim to limit data collection.
Better Scan requests are sent securely over HTTPS. Because Better Scan uses cloud OCR to improve unclear scans, parents should check the scanned words before the child reads.
Parents should protect the device using the available device security settings.
9. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy as WordTing develops. Any changes will be posted on this page.
